NASCAR is at phoenix international raceway this weekend where overnight and early morning rain soaked the track.

Before they heard the roar of engines Saturday they heard the sound of a rain drops hitting the ground.  "Well nobody wins when it rains at the races," said Buzz Smith.

"It started about 5 at the track this morning on and off with a real light drizzle, it's coming down pretty decent right now," said Dave Wingen.

Last weekends Daytona 500 had a 6 hour rain delay so Phoenix race fans were hoping to see a green light. "You know its coming, the cars are not going to get on the track with it wet so you might as well get up and leave soon as you feel a drop because its coming ain't no need sitting there," said Smith.

Buzz Smith was staying dry in a pop-up grocery store set up in the camping area. "See how dry it is right there. I got a good spot. Well if it gets any wetter I'll hunt me a piece of cardboard lay down and take me a nap," he said.

The rain stopped around 7 a.m. And with it came out the drying trucks. They used to use jet engines to dry the track, they now use compressed air. Officials say using compressed air dries the track 30 to 40 percent faster.

As the track dried, the Sprint Cup Series Practice started with storm clouds looming overhead. "It looks like weather will dictate what happens and when it happens today," said Smith.

"I think the land in this area needs the water a lot more than we need racing so if we need to do two races tomorrow instead of today that's alright by me," said Terry Tomm who visited the race from Canada.

Wingen has been coming to the races for many years and has only seen rain delay one race, "In the 15-18 years I've been here only one race that I can recall was called short because it did rain and hard," he said.

On Sunday, the NASCAR sprint cup series race starts at 1pm. You can bring old jeans to donate, you get 20-percent off all PIR NASCAR Nationwide Race Tickets.
