An inmate at the Wayne Co. Jail was found dead shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday by an officer performing a security check. He apparently used his bed sheets to hang himself.

The inmate has been identified as John Hotkowicz.

He was scheduled to be sentenced that same day after being convicted of murdering two people last April and setting their Detroit house on fire.

Hotkowicz, 33, is described as being a close friend to the victims at the time. Police say he shot Laura Connor and Julian Pirog, and the house he burned was where they were all living at the time.

The Wayne Co. Sheriff's office would not release any details about Hotkowicz's death, but says an internal investigation concerning an inmate's death is underway.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
