LOCKPORT, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Lockport man was arrested Thursday after a domestic incident ended in a five-hour long barricade situation at his southwest suburban home, according to police.

At 4:27 a.m., police responded to a report of gunshots in the area and found a woman outside a home in the 100 block of North Jefferson Street, Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming said.

Officers learned she had been involved in a domestic dispute with her 41-year-old husband that turned physical before he threw her out of the house, Lemming said.

Police took her to safety, and she was not hurt, Lemming said. The man remained barricaded inside the home, and officers allegedly heard gunshots coming from the house for about the next hour, he said.

The gunshots hit three other houses nearby, but no one was injured, Lemming said.

Negotiators with a multijurisdictional SWAT team talked the man into coming out of the house at 9:30 a.m. He remains in police custody and charges are pending, Lemming said.

Authorities recovered one handgun from the home, he said.

Will County School District 92 temporarily put Oak Prairie, Ludwig, Reed and Walsh schools on lockdown, according to a district representative. St. Joseph School, a private school nearby, was also on heightened alert status, a representative said.
