CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A South Side man was ordered held on $750,000 bond Tuesday after a search of his Calumet Heights neighborhood home Monday night yielded illegal firearms, pills, and cash.

Byron White, 41, the target of the search warrant, was charged with three counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm with defaced serial number, and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, police said.

Gresham District officers were executing a search warrant at his home in the 9200 block of South Merrill Avenue about 10:30 p.m. when two pit bulls charged them as they entered the basement, police said.

The officers fired their weapons and shot both dogs, one of which died, while the other was injured, police said. The officers were not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.

Two guns, illegal pills and an undisclosed amount of cash were seized during the search, police said.

Judge James Brown ordered White held on $750,000 bond Tuesday. He is next scheduled to appear in court March 20.
