Body Shops still busy from winter storms

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA, Ga. -

It's been four weeks since the first ice storm crippled Atlanta and made a mess of area roads. Thousands of people have filed insurance claims.

Many auto body shops are still slammed from the first blast of winter weather in January. Some are even booked with repairs straight into April.

It will be a while before we forget the images from the recent ice storms. You can bet they're even more painful to watch for the thousands of people whose vehicles were damaged.

For the most part, Chris Windish, the General Manager at Classic Collision of Buckhead says they are simple repairs. "Typical what we're seeing is light impacts," adds Chris.

Some though, were considered a total loss and auto body shops are working in overdrive to get drivers back on the road. "We have had a few windshield claims, a lot of trees falling on hoods, roofs, windshields-- that type of damage," explains Chris.

At Classic Collision of Buckhead, they're parking lot is already so full, they're booking appointments into April.

"I think it was over 4,000 claims filed in the Atlanta area. With the influx of work, we've had to schedule out-- we're already out a month and half. We're well into April for the repairs from the first ice storm," Chris states.

They say most customers have been patient. "They understand that they're going to have their car back pretty quick," estimates Chris.

More numbers are expected this week, but the Georgia's Insurance Commissioner says the first winter storm saw $25 million dollars worth of damage. The second ice storm will be at least $25 million as well. A new report is expected to add to that number.
