Women knitting hats and gloves to keep the homeless warm

(WJBK) -

A group of women meet at a Dearborn Heights restaurant every Monday night to knit scarves, hats and mittens for the homeless. They also deliver the items daily, mostly to Detroit but also to other cities as needed.

According to Michigan's Campaign to End Homelessness Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Monroe counties are home to the state's largest homeless population. The number of homeless people estimated to be in metro Detroit is more than 34,000. About 6,000 of those are children.

Millie Judd says the group has made 2,097 items and they are hoping to reach 3,000 items by the end of 2014. She founded the group after meeting a New Jersey teen whose knitting group inspired her. Word spread about the group on social media.

The group is always in need of more supplies, such as more knitters, more yarn and always information of shelters in need of supplies.

"If I can make someone smile and think, 'Oh, somebody cared enough to give this to me,' that makes me happy," says Pat Birdsall. She is 72-years-old and says her mother taught her to knit when she was 16 years old.

If you are looking for more information about the group you can visit their Facebook page, Millie's Hats for Hope Initiative:MI.
