Saline creates task force to combat growing heroin problem

Posted: Updated:
SALINE, Mich. (WJBK) -

The City of Saline has created a task force made up of the police and fire chiefs, a substance abuse coordinator and a psychologist, among others, to combat the growing abuse of heroin in the community.

Fifteen overdoses were reported in the city last year. Three of those resulted in death.

The deadly drug may also have been the motivation for the murder of a MSU student who was found on the side of I-69 near east Lansing.

Three teens, who attended Saline High School, have been charged in connection to the death of Dustyn Folka's. Investigators believe they wanted money for drugs.

Saline Mayor Brian Marl put the task force together.

"It validates the reasons for establishing this task force, that it's not only addictions, overdoses and tragic fatalities but it's crimes, homicides - in this case, in fact, premeditated - that were perpetuated because of drug abuse and addiction," says Marl.

"A person who's not a criminal will turn into a criminal because of heroin. Every time I see the stuff on the news I can almost pick them out now," says Kimberly Ray. She lost her 21-year-old son to a heroin addiction a couple months ago.

The task force plans to meet again in March. If you would like more information on the group or about the meeting you can contact the force directly by emailing: sataskforce@cityofsaline.org.
