CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A dead woman found wrapped in a blanket in a West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood alley on Friday was strangled, an autopsy has shown.

Officers found the body of the 51-year-old woman about 2:20 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of North Homan Avenue, News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

The body was wrapped in a blanket in an alley, he said.

Velma Howard, 51, of the 2900 block of West Madison Street, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy Monday found she was strangled, and the medical examiner's office ruled her death a homicide.

Area North detectives are conducting a homicide investigation, but no one was in custody as of Monday afternoon.
