Roads or refund? Mich. lawmakers debate spending the state's surplus

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Michigan taxpayers would get $100 back from the state under an income tax rollback plan that cleared a House committee in Lansing Wednesday, but some lawmakers think that money should go to the roads instead.

Democrats tried to redirect the money into the roads but Republicans blocked it.

"Before we start sending 20 dollars back to the average taxpayer, which doesn't even cover a tenth of their front wheel alignment that they're going to have to pay for, we should look at fixing the infrastructure," says state Rep. Vicki Barnett, (D) of Farmington Hills.

The latest polling data suggests 38 percent of the voters want to fix the roads and only 11 percent want a tax rebate.

"We already pay the seventh highest tax in gasoline the country. Michigan residents are already paying for first-class roads," says Scott Hagerstrom of Americans for Prosperity.

"It is an embarrassment to have folks come in from outside of Michigan and they're bumping along like we do every day, and it's so noticeable and it's dangerous," says Tricia Kinley, Mich. Chamber of Commerce.
