Hearings continue in Chicago on athletes' union

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The National Labor Relations Board holds a second day of hearings on a bid by Northwestern University football players to create the nation's first college athletes' union.

Union attorneys continue to present their case Wednesday in federal court in Chicago.

Their next witness is expected to be the president of the newly formed College Athletes Players Association, former UCLA linebacker Ramogi Huma.

Northwestern could start their case opposing the union later Wednesday.

The first witness was Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter.

In five hours of testimony Tuesday, Colter argued his relationship to the school was one of employee to employer. He says players work according to strict schedules and they receive compensation - in the form of scholarships.

If the board finds the players are employees, they can unionize.
