JOLIET, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A southwest suburban man is facing felony charges after more than 630 cannabis plants were found in an "elaborate" growing system taking up the basement of his home, police said.

Nhat Van Hoang, 52, of the 25200 block of Spring Street in Manhattan, is charged with production of cannabis plants, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, and possession of drug equipment, a statement from the Will County Sheriff's office said.

Members of the sheriff's Gang Suppression Unit found 639 marijuana plants when they executed a search warrant at the home just before 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the statement said.

The basement was split into separate grow rooms, each with elaborate electrical, venting and irrigation systems, police said.

Authorities also found a digital weigh scale, heat sealer and several boxes of heat sealed bags, the statement said.

Hoang was not home at the time, but was arrested the next day when surveillance officers saw him arrive at the residence.

The plants have an estimated street value of more than $350,000, police said. Authorities also seized a 2005 Acura SUV as part of the investigation.

Hoang was ordered held on a $50,000 bond at the Will County jail, the sheriff's office said.
