Chicago company helps debunk `Obamacare` myths

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

YouTube is filled with stories about The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

"For me this act will affect me on a daily basis… 46, I think the last figure was, million Americans don't have health insurance, what I consider to be a universal right," posted Shannon McGinnis on YouTube.

"People are saying that it's really high, it's not really affordable," said "SkinnyMedic" on YouTube.

"The worse thing about the Affordable Care Act is that nobody really understands it," said Lisa Ferguson on her YouTube channel "LFTV."

One in five people who have signed up for the new health care law have reportedly not paid their first month's premium. Michael Mahoney says that's the final step to completing an enrollment.

He also debunked several myths.

"Even today, a lot of them are calling in and they're surprised to hear that a deadline exist. Saturday, for example, is the last day to enroll to get a March 1st effective date," said Mahoney in an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis.

But the biggest misconception?

"Absolutely not free, no it's not free… I think a lot of it has to do with a lack of education. It's not so much that there's a lot misinformation as much as there hasn't been a lot of education out there. There were federal dollars earmarked for education in October at the state and federal level and those ads just didn't run simply because things weren't working," said Mahoney.

Mahoney is the Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing at Go Health Insurance in River North. It existed before the ACA.

The company helps people choose the right healthcare plan.

Go Health is turning to social media to get the word out about Saturday's enrollment deadline and more.

"If you haven't paid for it, you don't have it but here's the thing to remember, if you don't pay before your effective date, that's it, you have to start over," said Mahoney.
