NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A soldier from Fort Drum in northern New York was killed on an airfield in Afghanistan, the Defense Department said.

Pfc. Joshua A. Gray, 21, of Van Lear, Ky., died February 10, at Bagram Airfield in what the Pentagon calls a "non-combat related incident," which is under investigation.

Gray joined the Army in November 2012, arrived at Fort Drum (where he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division) in October 2013, and deployed to Afghanistan in January.

Among his awards and decorations are the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Expert Marksmanship Badge.

Gray is survived by his mother and father.

Flags on state government buildings will fly at half-staff Friday, February 14, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Private 1st Class Joshua Gray," Cuomo said in a statement. "We are saddened at the death of this young soldier, and we join with his fellow soldiers at Fort Drum in mourning his passing and honoring his service."
