Advocates for expanded gambling hopeful this year

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Advocates of gambling expansion say the timing is ripe to push the legislation through the Illinois General Assembly this spring.

They say other issues, such as pension reform, are out of the way and the measure would bring the state badly needed cash. But the bill's fate also will be complicated by the campaigns ahead of November's general election.

The legislation proposes five new casinos and slot machines at racetracks and at airports. Supporters say it will generate $400 million to $1 billion in revenue.

Gov. Pat Quinn has indicated he will consider legislation if it contains strong ethics standards and "proper oversight."

Lawmakers are also looking hard at new sources of revenue as the state's temporary income tax increase is set to expire next January.
