The dangers of heroin

(WJBK) -

The recent, sudden death of actor Phillip Seymor Hoffman has put heroin in the spotlight. Heroin use is on the rise in the city and in the suburbs, and as it continues to go up the deadly consequences do, too.

"The Monroe area, for Michigan, seems to be kind of a hot bed for heroin activity currently. There have been about a dozen deaths in recent months," says Dr. Carmen McIntyre from the Detroit Wayne County Mental Health Authority. She says some areas are worse than others, but this heroin crisis is everywhere.

"Kids in the home - they start experimenting with their parents pain pills and when that runs out they turn to the heroine that's available on the street," says McIntyre.

Heroin comes from morphine, which comes from the poppy plant. Whether you smoke it, snort it or inject it, it hits the brain fast and triggers pleasure. It's one of the most addictive drugs around. As the addiction amps up a user needs a bigger dose, turning the addiction deadly.

"What happens is, is when you take a high dose of heroin your diaphragm slows down to the point where you stop breathing," says McIntyre.

If you or someone you know is in need of help battling an addiction you can call the 24-hour crisis hotline at the Detroit Wayne Mental health Authority at (800) 241-4949.
