CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A northwest suburban man has been charged with driving drunk and causing a crash that injured an IDOT maintenance worker who was stopped to help a motorist on the Kennedy Expressway Sunday night.

Kollin Fairbanks, 22, of Long Grove, is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the crash on the southbound shoulder of the expressway near Addison Street, Illinois State Police Trooper David Roman said.

The IDOT worker was getting into his truck about 11 p.m. after helping a motorist fix a flat tire when the SUV Fairbanks was driving slammed into the back of the truck, State Police claim.

The IDOT worker suffered minor injuries to his left arm and was taken to Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center in good condition, Collins said.

The 22-year-old SUV driver was taken in good condition with minor facial lacerations to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, he said.

Fairbanks was also charged with violating Scott's Law, which increases penalties for motorists who fail to yield for emergency vehicles.

He was also cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, not having insurance, not wearing a seat belt and not having a driver's license with him, Roman said.
