Head-on collision sends 4 to hospital

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

One woman was critically injured and three others were hospitalized after a wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle in the Northwest Side Edison Park neighborhood.

Around midnight Sunday, a 29-year-old woman in a ‘97 Buick four-door vehicle was heading south in the northbound lanes of the 6700 block of North Harlem Avenue, Niles police said.

A 60-year-old woman driving a 2012 Ford SUV heading north about a block away spotted the wrong-way driver and tried to switch lanes to avoid a crash. But as the Buick's driver switched lanes to the right, the cars collided head-on, police said.

The Buick's driver, from north suburban Glenview, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical condition, authorities said.

The Ford's driver and two women in her car -- all from north suburban Northfield -- were taken to Presence Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center with minor injuries, police said.

Though the crash was in Chicago, Niles Police Department is investigating the crash because they cover the northbound Harlem Avenue lanes that border St. Adalbert Cemetery, at 6800 N. Milwaukee Ave., in north suburban Niles.

The wrong-way driver was cited for improper lane usage. She had no proof of auto insurance or a driver's license on her, police said.

Alcohol was not suspected to be a factor, police said.
