Snow storm hits New York and New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - While Super Bowl 48 was dubbed the "snow bowl" or "winter-weather bowl" the problems started the day after the big game.

The tristate region got hit with another snow storm in a winter that already feels like it has dragged on forever. Two more storms are in the forecast for later this week.

The precipitation began as rain and sleet early Monday morning and changed over to snow around 8 a.m. on Monday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for his state because of hazardous conditions.

Parts of New Jersey, New York City and Long Island got 8 inches or more of snow.

The snow was heavy between mid-morning and early Monday afternoon.

Temperatures were expected to remain in the low 30s during the storm with winds out of the North at 5 to 15 miles per hour.

The snow trailed off at about 7 p.m.

The New York City Department of Sanitation issued a 'snow alert' for Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 starting at 1 a.m. That put crews on alert to start preparing for snow removal.

Alternate side of the street parking rules were suspended Monday and Tuesday for snow removal.

Sanitation began monitoring NYPD security cameras at midnight to get real-time information on snow fall.

"It gives us another set of eyes... to better judge our city," Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said.
