Crews lay more salt ahead of weekend winter storm

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago has already gone through much of its snow removal budget this year. Crews will be putting down more salt this weekend for the coming storm. But are there any side-effects from all that salt?

There definitely are. It affects your car, your pets and in some parts of the city, you can even taste it in the air. FOX 32's Anita Padilla reports on how you can protect your vehicle and your furry friends.

Thursday's snowfall made January 2014 the third snowiest month in Chicago history. The four-tenths of an inch that fell brought this month's snowfall to 33.5 inches so far this year.

Many Chicagoans remember the brutal winter of 1979. In January of that year, just over 40 inches of snow fell making that month second in line.

But the all-time snowiest January for Chicago took place in 1918, when 42.5 inches of snow fell.
