Petitions arise over proposed bike lanes on Milwaukee Avenue

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Protected bike lanes have been popping up around the city of Chicago for some time. Most times they are met with mixed emotions.

The latest debate is over a portion of a more than $1 million project to repair Milwaukee Avenue on the North West side.

People in the Gladstone Park community are concerned over the nearly 10 mile stretch of Milwaukee Avenue from Elston to Lawrence avenues.

"We like the bike lanes, but we like them where they are," said John Garrido.

John Garrido started a petition signed by those who do not want to see these protected bike lanes.

"There's cars that fly up and down Milwaukee Avenue, but there are other ways to reduce speed besides the drastic measure of taking out a lane of traffic," Garrido said.

Business owners and residents have their own concerns about the proposal to possibly reduce Milwaukee Avenues to two lanes and add larger bike lanes.

"What we've seen throughout the city, with the proposed protected bike path, the way they're plowed and everything, there's snow between the spokes and there's more snow on the sidewalks. So it makes it that much tougher for seniors to get to where they're going," said Davie Wians, President of the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce.

Richie Betts, a resident of the area said, "I'm still on the fence with it, because aesthetically it could be a good thing , but not the way it's being talked about."

A counter petition was started by bicycle activist Bob Kastigar.

He feels adding the protected bike lanes will actually be good for business and safety.

"If you're driving down the street at 40 miles an hour, you ain't going to look at the businesses; you're going to look at the road. But, if you're riding down the street at 20 or 30 or riding a bicycle, you're going to see all those little businesses," Kastigar said.
