Signs and symptoms of tuberculosis disease

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called mycobacterium tuberculosis. It usually attacks the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, tuberculosis can be deadly.

It's spread through the air from one person to another. The bacteria gets into the air when a person with tuberculosis of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, or speaks. People can breathe in those bacteria and become infected.

SYMPTOMS OF TB DISEASE

+ A bad cough that lasts three weeks or longer
 + Pain in the chest
+ Coughing up blood or sputum (phlegm from deep inside the lungs)
 + Weakness or fatigue
 + Weight loss
 + No appetite
 + Chills
 + Fever
 + Night sweats

Two kinds of tests detect tuberculosis bacteria in the body: A skin test or a blood test. Both can be given by your health provider or local health department.

WHO SHOULD GET TESTED

+ People who have been exposed to someone with the disease
+ Those with a compromised immune system
 + People with symptoms
