Cold weather causes decrease in blood donations

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The bitter cold is putting the squeeze on Chicago's blood banks.

LifeSource said since Monday the below-zero temps have caused close to 800 people to cancel blood donation appointments.

A handful of schools in the area have also canceled blood drives.

LifeSource said there's always a shortage after the holidays, but typically they're caught up by now.

LifeSource is expanding its hours to try to make it easier for people to come in.
