Cushingberry's law license to be suspended

(WJBK) -

The state Attorney Discipline Board accepted the deal Monday Detroit City Councilman George Cushingberry Jr. struck to resolve a complaint filed by a former client. Cushingberry's law license will be suspended for 45 days beginning Feb. 18.

Paul Haddad told the Attorney Grievance Commission Cushingberry agreed to represent him a couple years ago, but did little more than accept a $500 payment. Cushingberry's alleged misconduct cost Haddad's Detroit store its ability to accept food stamps, costing Haddad tens of thousands of dollars.

Cushingberry agreed to give up his law license temporarily, as well as refund Haddad's $500 payment. Cushingberry also agreed to attend the state Bar association's Tips and Tools for a Successful Practice workshop and pay more than $900 in fees.
