CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Public safety personnel combined with roughly 70 volunteers Saturday to search for a missing 82-year-old north suburban Glencoe man, but the whereabouts of Harvey Caplin remains unknown.

Glencoe Deputy Police Chief Alan Kebby said late Saturday afternoon that despite an extensive search of the area, Caplin, who suffers from dementia, has not been found, the Pioneer Press is reporting.

Hopes had been raised when four reports came in late this week saying Caplin had been seen walking on Dundee Road soon after he disappeared Tuesday evening.

Searchers combed an area of about 1.5 miles Saturday, ranging from Tower Road to the south to Lake-Cook Road to the north and Forestway Drive on the east to the Edens Expressway on the west. However, it did not prove to be successful.

"We didn't find him in the area that we expected to find him," Kebby said.

The fact that Caplin has dementia makes the task that much more difficult, Kebby said.

"That complicates things," he said. "Like the cold, it's another challenge we face."

An extensive effort will not take place Sunday as the operation will shift from a rescue and recovery to a missing persons case.

Caplin was last seen by his wife about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when he walked away from his home near the intersection of Dundee Road and Forestway Drive.

The professional volunteers gathered at the Erickson Woods section of the Cook County Forest Preserve Saturday morning are experienced in missing persons situations. They came in to assist public safety officers in an effort coordinated by the Cook County Department of Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency.

Large numbers of police cars were located at Forest Preserve entrances and groups of people could be seen Saturday moving through the snow, all with the hope of trying to figure out what happened to Caplin.

Saturday's search attempt capped off a weeklong effort that has included snowmobiles, divers, helicopters, dogs, cell phone alerts and an electronic sign on Dundee Road notifying motorists to the situation.

Before the hunt started Saturday, Kebby had a sliver of optimism Caplin may have been picked up by a motorist and taken to a medical facility.

"I'm still hopeful he is in a hospital someplace and the dots haven't been connected," he said.

As of Saturday night, that had not happened.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Glencoe Police at 847-461-1135.
