Chicagoans veto the vortex, head to warmer areas

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Feeling trapped by these sub-zero temps? Looking for a warm escape? So are many others.

As the temperatures fall, the number of Chicagoans dreaming of a warm escape is on the rise.

"They want to go quick. They want to go in the next couple of weeks," Manager of Sunset Travel Renee Meaux said.

Warmth is what travelers are seeking. Renee Meaux manages the Sunset Travel Agency in Lincoln Park. Mexico, Dominican Republic and Jamaica are the current hot spots for Chicago travelers looking to veto the vortex.

"December, we did 50% more in sales than we did in the past 5 years, and I think that's due to the snow and the cold. People want to get away," Meaux said.

The hard part is sometimes figuring out how to do it, and chances are, if a trip hasn't been planned by now, the winter getaway could be on ice.

"At least book two to three months out instead of waiting for the last minute ..I know people want to buy those last minutes deals that they see online. Sometimes you can find them, but you should plan ahead a little bit," Meaux said.

Of course not everyone can escape at the drop of a snowflake. Still, that isn't stopping some from dreaming of a land where the only ice is found in your pool side beverage.
