Power foods may protect you from illness

ATLANTA -

According to some reports, the flu is expected to peak in the next two weeks, so what can parents do to help keep the flu at bay?

Plant foods, like veggies, fruits and spices, are rich in antioxidants that strengthen our immune systems. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's experts serve up "power foods" to ward against germs this winter.

Registered Dietitian Lauren Lorenzo from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta says food like "kiwi, kale, spinach and cabbage" will have high vitamin and mineral content and high antioxidant content.

Does eating these foods mean you won't get sick or the flu?

  • No one thing is a magic bullet when it comes to the flu.
  • Good nutrition helps to improve immune health.
  • The healthier your body is the more resistant it will be to getting colds and the flu.
  • If you do get sick, a healthy body will bounce back more quickly.

So how do "power foods" work?

  • One great way to build up your immune system is to eat foods that are rich in the vitamins, antioxidants and minerals your body needs.
  • There is no substitute for the nutritional value that foods like vegetables and fruits provide when eaten in its whole form.
  • Your family's immune systems will respond more quickly to these dietary changes than you'd think.
