Help pours in for family of 13 who lost everything in fire

BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. -

A Butts County family of 13 who lost everything in a house fire says they overwhelmed by the generosity of FOX 5 viewers.

Lisa Murphy cares for 12 children. Some are her own, some are grandchildren and some were adopted. On Sunday morning, an electrical fire consumed her home and destroyed everything she and her children owned.

"I've done for people my whole life and really, it's hard to ask for help and accept help," Murphy said.

But Murphy didn't even have to ask. The help came rushing in like an avalanche.

A back building at Murphy's church, Heritage Baptist in Locust Grove, is now storing the donations made to the family.

"It's just unimaginable how quickly, since this has happened,  that everybody has just brought things out and wanted to be there help in any way they could. It's just a blessing," said Michelle Kunder of Heritage Baptist Church.

Each one of Murphy's12 children has a pile of clothes at the church; there's also much needed furniture and everyday essentials for getting back on her feet. Much of it was donated by total strangers.

Jennifer Symmes had not met Murphy before the fire. Yet, she built a website for her raised more than $12,000 in less than a day.

"I think naturally, when you meet someone like that, you want to give back, and that's what this community has been drawn to," Symmes said.

That money will go to Murphy's number one goal now: rebuilding her house on the same site. She says for her children, it has to be a priority.

"This is home and if we rebuild here, it kind of -- it doesn't replace what they've lost, but it makes where they feel like they belong here," Murphy said.

Murphy says her insurance company is still reviewing her policy and has not decided how much it will add to the cost of rebuilding.
