Little Richard's boyhood home in Ga. to be moved

Posted: Updated:

MACON, Ga. (AP) - Work is expected to begin soon in Macon on moving the boyhood home of rock 'n' roll singer Little Richard and turning it into a community center.

The Telegraph of Macon reports the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to have the project in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood underway within two months. The DOT is looking to relocate 26 homes in the neighborhood to allow for expansion of the interchange where Interstates 75 and 16 meet.

One of them is the home at 1540 Fifth Ave. where Richard Penniman, who later became famous as Little Richard, lived after he was born in Macon in 1932. Now the DOT has covered the roof with plastic and surrounded it with fencing in preparation for the move to a park four blocks away.
