Chief Craig: Cushingberry traffic stop investigation still ongoing, favoritism is a 'key focus'

(WJBK) -

Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the investigation into how a supervisor handled a traffic stop involving Detroit councilman George Cushingberry Jr. isn't over yet, but it is moving in the right direction. Craig says one more person needs to be interviewed, which will likely happen next week.

"Clearly, the message to every Detroit police officer is that we enforce the law impartially, ethically and no favoritism," says Craig.

The traffic stop in question happened back on January 7 when officers pulled over Cushingberry's car and found an empty bottle of alcohol and marijuana. The passenger, who is Cushingberry's long-time friend, had a valid medical marijuana card. A police supervisor was called out to the scene. Cushingberry received a ticket for failing to use his traffic signal but was then let go.

The chief on Friday said he was concerned with how some of the evidence was handled in the stop but has no plans to issue any new citations to Cushingberry or his passenger. He also says he respects the decision not to make any arrests that night.

"In my judgement, based on what we know about the investigation, the police officers acted appropriately. We support their actions, we support the fact that they were out trying to create a safe community. However, I am concerned about the allegation of possible favoritism. Don't know yet, because we don't have a final investigation, but that is certainly a key focus of our investigation," says Craig.

The chief also reported Cushingberry's keys were removed from the vehicle during the traffic stop, in response to some concern that he might try to drive off.
