Cab wars continue between taxis and Uber

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

More than a year after the taxi-hailing app, Uber, came to Chicago there remains tensions between cabbies and the tech-company.

Recently, frustrations boiled over in Paris, and some Uber drivers there were attacked and had their windows smashed.

Uber seems to be a love 'em or hate 'em business on the streets of Chicago.

Yet despite a pending lawsuit by several taxi companies, it appears Uber is "faring" quite well, despite the resentment and frustrations it's causing for many cabbies.

"Actually it's spoiling our business, like in many ways, spoil our business," Taxi driver, Ahmed Syed, said.

This week a pair of riders in a Paris Uber car tweeted about a frightening experience when their vehicle was attacked by angry taxi drivers, upset because they consider the service a threat to their livelihood.

The mood in Chicago seems much more civil.

"We partner with Chicago taxi drivers, we help them grow their businesses, so I don't think we'll see the same backlash," Uber Midweat Regional Manager, Andrew Macdonald said.

The complaints against Uber often focus on their limo connection service, Uber Black, or their ride share service, Uber X, which involves everyday drivers out to make extra money by hiring themselves out.

"To me they're kinda causing harm to the taxi business," driver, Patrick Tawiah, said.

Macdonald said that because of the nature of their company they will face tension many places they go, "We face tension because we're a new technology, in a lot of places we go, and it tends to be an industry that's a bit older and hasn't evolved as much, so we face tension, but ultimately consumers get what they want."

Uber users like the convenience, as do many taxis who benefit by participating.

"It's giving me extra business so it's a good product for the taxi business, assuming the driver is licensed and using Uber, I don't see what's the problem. I mean it's just extra money," driver, Costel Serbam, said.
