CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A parolee was ordered held on $30,000 bond Monday for allegedly carjacking and robbing two women at gunpoint on New Year's Day in parking garages near Michigan Avenue downtown.

Brandon L. Burns, 23, was arrested Friday afternoon after police spotted him pushing a vehicle into a gas station in the 100 block of West 63rd Street, police News Affairs said in a release.

Grand Crossing District officers checked the license plate, and arrested Burns after they found out the vehicle had been taken in a carjacking, the release said.

Burns allegedly committed the first robbery about 11:10 a.m. on New Year's Day in a parking garage in the 100 block of West Superior Street, police said.

He pointed a gun at a 24-year-old woman, and took her purse and wallet, police claim.

A few hours later, at 2:40 p.m., he allegedly pointed a gun at a 40-year-old woman in another garage in the 100 block of East Chestnut Street, police said. He demanded her purse then drove off in her vehicle, police claim.

Both women later identified him as the suspect in both robberies, the release said.

Burns, of the 200 block of East 77th Street, is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery, both felonies, police said. He was also held on a warrant for violating his parole.

He began serving a one-year prison sentence in May 2013 after he was convicted of possession of a controlled substance, according to prison records. He was paroled three months later.

Burns will next appear in court Friday for a preliminary hearing on the robbery charges, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.
