CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man died early Wednesday after he drove a van around the crossing gates and was struck by a Metra train Tuesday morning in south suburban Robbins.

Outbound Rock Island District train No. 509 hit the van about 11:10 a.m. at the Robbins station near 139th Street and Utica Avenue, according to Metra.

The driver of the van, 42-year-old Emmanuel Allen, was taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was transferred in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital about 2:15 p.m.

Allen, of the 600 block of East 83rd Street, was pronounced dead at Stroger at 1:11 a.m. Wednesday, the medical examiner's office said. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

None of the 30 passengers on the train were injured, according to the Robbins Fire Department.

The train was on the move again Tuesday afternoon but ran 68 minutes behind schedule, according to Metra's website. At least three other trains were delayed.

The Metra Police Department is investigating the incident.
