Autopsy: Dawsonville men died of accidental drowning

Posted: Updated:

Two Dawsonville men who went missing after leaving for a fishing trip died of drowning, according to the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.

The bodies of David Wood and Mason Cox were discovered in Lake Lanier on Friday. The two 20-year-old men had not been seen since leaving for an early morning fishing trip in the area of Frederick's Cove on Jan. 2.

The bodies were submerged about 15 to 20 feet and about 30 yards from a nearby dock. Both men were fully clothed and there were no obvious signs of trauma, according to investigators.

An autopsy conducted on Monday determined accidental drowning to be the cause of death. The deaths were compounded by hypothermia, according to investigators.  Toxicology results are pending.
