Rockdale County twin pleads guilty in death of mother

Posted: Updated:

One of the Rockdale County twins accused of killing her mother pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges on Thursday.

FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor reports that Tazmiyah Whitehead was sentenced to 30 years in prison in the death of her mother, Nikki Whitehead.

Nikki Whitehead was beaten and stabbed to death in a Conyers home on Jan. 13, 2010. Her then-16-year-old twin daughters, Tazmiyah and Jasmiyah, were arrested and charged in the death.

Rockdale County District Attorney Richard Reed told the court that Nikki and her twin daughters had a tumultuous and violent relationship. Juvenile court sent the girls to live with their great-grandmother, Della Frazier, at one point.

Reed said the mother and daughters would argue and fight over things such as sexual activity with boys, truancy and marijuana use. Prosecutors said the dysfunctional relationship finally came to a head when a judge ordered the twins to move back in with their mother.

"Jasmiyah was even so upset that she said in the presence of the victim and the victim's mother, Lynda Whitehead, that, ‘If I have to go live with you again, I'll going to kill you,'" said Reed.

In January 2010 yet another fight turned deadly. The twins said their mom grabbed a pot and later a knife before they stabbed her to death. Reed said that the twins initially lied about their involvement, but in recent weeks Tazmiyah came clean.

Lynda Whitehead says she believes she could have made a difference in the girls' lives if the juvenile court had only given her a chance.

"I would have made sure that they had a loving relationship with their mom. It wouldn't have been the conflict that we went through," said Lynda Whitehead.

Jasmiyah Whitehead's trial is slated to begin in March. It's not clear if Tasmiyah will testify against her sister.
