CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Comcast employee on the job was shot and critically wounded Wednesday afternoon during a robbery in the South Shore neighborhood.

The shooting happened a few minutes before 1 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Kingston Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

The 45-year-old man was sitting in his vehicle in an alley when he was approached by an armed man who stole his wallet, then shot him in the abdomen before running away, Zala said.

The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, Zala said.

A spokesperson for Comcast confirmed the victim was a Comcast employee and was working at the time.

"This is shocking news, and our thoughts and prayers go out to our employee and his loved ones," a statement from Comcast spokesperson Angelynne Amores said.

"We will continue working with law enforcement as they investigate," Amores said.

Area South detectives are investigating.
