ATLANTA, Ga. -

Uber is a popular car service here in Atlanta and in other major cities across the country.

A lot of people use it in place of traditional taxi cabs. Users order a car with an application on a phone and no cash is exchanged: it's all done electronically with a credit card already on file.

Some people are complaining they got "taken for a ride" on New Year's Eve by getting charged more than three and a half times what they normally pay. For example, one user tells FOX 5 a commute that normally costs about $60 cost upwards of $200 on New Year's Eve.

Click the video above to see the story of one Atlanta couple that was taken buy surprise by the price increase.

Uber did send out an email warning to its customers about the surge pricing on New Year's Eve. The costs were even detailed with a graph.

That graph shows what the estimated pricing would be hour by hour, with the highest prices being between 12:15 and 2:30am.

Regardless of that warning, several users here in Atlanta and around the country Didn't expect prices "that" high...and they're lodging online complaints about it.
