Cook County to target DUI, seat belt violations

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says officers will step up enforcement efforts against seat belt and drunken driving violators.

Dart says specialized patrols will be carried out Saturday night to stop people who are driving under the influence.

And then on Jan. 3 and 4, officers will conduct extra patrols focusing on enforcing seat belt laws.

The patrols are being paid for through an Illinois Department of Transportation grant.

Dart says recent similar efforts have paid off. He says 51 people were stopped during a two-night seat belt enforcement effort at the end of November, resulting in 13 seatbelt citations and one arrest for driving on a suspended or revoked license.

He says a late-November traffic safety checkpoint resulted in eight arrests, including for DUI, drug possession and license violations.
