Westland family still waiting for landlord repairs one month after house fire

A family in Westland say they are still waiting for their landlord to make the necessary repairs to make their rental unit livable again after a fire damaged the house more than one month ago.

Previously, the family complained of rats so, they say, the landlord gave them an aerosol can of insulation and, when Dad sprayed near the gas water heater to plug a few holes, fire from the pilot light raced up along the aerosol spray.

"A fireball came up and burnt his face here," says Rachael Jacobs, motioning to the top of her forehead. She says the fire was in the crawlspace. Firefighters stopped the fire from spreading, but the house is damaged. A lack of a hot water heater and a clothes dryer, plus damage to the home, drove the family to live with relatives.

The fire happened November 18th.

"And it's been over a month and it's really getting annoying staying from place to place and not being able to be back in my house," says Jacobs. The family says the landlord has blown them off; he left the county on vacation Dec. 7.

This family says they pay their rent every month and always pay in full a few days early. The best news the family is healthy, but the smell of smoke still lingers in the home. They say they can live with the smell but there's still no hot water inside the home.

Fox 2's Ron Savage says he contact the family's landlord on the phone. The landlord says he is back in town and will make progress on the home. He says he will contact the insurance company on Saturday to begin the repairs on the house.
