$42.5M approved for Circle Interchange makeover

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois is pouring more money into the circle interchange. The four-year makeover will cost a total of $475 million.

The Circle Interchange is where the Chicago area's major expressways come together, just west of the Loop. Drivers, be warned. While work is underway, it's going to cause traffic problems.

Gov. Quinn approved more than $42 million of additional funds for the work on Thursday. The latest batch of money will pay for a bridge at Halsted and Harrison streets and new approaches.

But when it's done, the route will be safer and traffic delays should be cut in half, saving drivers an estimated 5 million hours each year. There are currently more than 1,000 accidents in the circle every year.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is managing the Circle Interchange project. This is the first major construction since the interchange was finished back in the 1960's.
