Chicagoland Dominick`s stores to close for the last time

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Saturday will mark the end of an era in Chicagoland, as 57 Dominick's stores across the area close their doors for the last time.

The grocery company is going out of business. Customers have been taking advantage of big sales as the grocer prepares to exit the market after posting losses in the millions. Fifteen of the 72 Dominick's locations in Chicago have been purchased by either Jewel-Osco or Mariano's, and will continue operating during the transfer.

In the past month, shoppers have cleaned off the shelves after Dominick's parent company, Safeway, offered deep discounts on merchandise. There hasn't been much to purchase at the Dominick's in Streeterville since the big sales, but employees kept reporting for duty and tried to stay positive as the final farewell approaches.

It's the biggest job layoff in Chicago in years, and it is especially emotional. The stores were communities where employees visited with customers weekly, watched families grow and saw neighborhoods change over the years. From the bakery to the deli to the checkout counter, many customers have come to call members of their local Dominick's staff family.

"It's sad really sad. Depressing. We love our customers," one employee told FOX 32 News. "A new year, something positive has to come out of this, stay positive, we are."

Management at the Streeterville grocery thanked customers for their patronage but most of all, their friendship.
