ST. CHARLES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Carpentersville man was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for punching his girlfriend, rupturing her spleen and sending her to the hospital for a week last year.

Tyrell D. Sumling, 24, of the 2000 block of Berkshire Circle in northwest suburban Carpentersville, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's office.

After an argument between Sumling and his long-time girlfriend broke out on June 19, 2012, Sumling punched her in the abdomen and ruptured her spleen, prosecutors said. Her spleen was removed as a result of the rupture and she was hospitalized for a week while she recovered.

This is the fourth time Sumling has been convicted of beating someone, prosecutors said. He has also been convicted for domestic battery incidents in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Sumling will serve at least 86 percent of the five-year sentence, the state's attorney's office said. He was given credit for at least 448 days served in the Kane County jail, where he has been held since his arrest on $750,000 bond.
