CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man armed with a semi-automatic handgun robbed a bank Tuesday morning in the South Side New City neighborhood.

The man robbed the First Merit Bank branch at 1715 W. 47th St. about 9:35 a.m., according to FBI spokesperson Joan Hyde.

The suspect is described a 6-foot black man in his mid-to-late 50s with a medium build and gray facial hair, Hyde said. He was wearing a clear plastic breathing mask, a long black coat, and light beige glasses, authorities said.

Hyde said he displayed a black handgun inside a jacket pocket.

He fled the bank with an unknown amount of money, authorities said. No one was injured during the robbery.

No one is in custody. The FBI and Area Central detectives are investigating.
