WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Carol Stream man was sentenced to 33 years in prison Friday for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in 2011.

A jury found 40-year-old Antonio Penaflor guilty on Oct. 31 of four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of criminal sexual abuse, according to a release from DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

In the fall of 2011, Penaflor sexually assaulted his acquaintance's cousin on multiple occasions in both her home and an area hotel, the State's Attorney's office said.

Penaflor's acquaintance grew suspicious and took the 12-year-old to Carol Stream Police Department, where she told police about the abuse, the State's Attorney said. Penaflor was arrested on Feb. 29, 2012 after the police department and DuPage County Children's Center launched an investigation.

Penaflor was sentenced to 33 years in prison Friday by DuPage County Judge George Bakalis and will have to serve 27 years before he is eligible for parole, the statement said.

"The victim in this case showed tremendous courage to come forward with what Mr. Penaflor had done to her and for that she is to be commended," said State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin in the statement.
