CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's not too late to help a Chicago area family in need this Christmas. The U.S. Postal Service still has thousands of letters to Santa that need to be answered and filled.

"Tomorrow's our very last day and anyone can come down here to the main post office and get a letter," Necchi Tunious-Boyd with Operation Santa explains.

This year, more than 9,000 letters to Operation Santa arrived at the main branch of the U.S. Postal Service. 6,000 of those letters remain, waiting for someone like Nick Delong,

"I actually was coming here to mail a rent check and I saw this table was going on," says Delong. "So I went through some of the letters, picked out some of them and then decided all right we'll go get some gifts."

Operation Santa started 101 years ago, giving the public an opportunity to help needy families that might not otherwise have gifts to open on Christmas morning.

Operation Santa Director Necchi Tunious Boyd reads from one of the letters that has yet to be answered.

"I lost my job and my children will not have a Christmas this year," says Tunious-Boyd. "So I'm asking anyone available to please choose my letter and bless my child with a gift."

And while there are the usual requests for dolls and games and XBoxes and the like, many family's needs are more basic.

"I picked up a couple letters and purchased the things that the child was asking for. One of the kids was asking for a coat and some shoes. Not toys," Cordia Forte tells FOX 32.

Anyone interested in helping should stop by the main post office at Harrison and Canal Saturday to pick out a letter among the thousands that remain. Gifts will need to be brought back by Monday so they can be boxed and shipped in time for Christmas morning.
