New Detroit City Council sworn in, first meeting Jan. 6

All nine council members took the oath of office Wednesday at Wayne State University's Alumni House.

The five new faces are George Cushingberry Jr., Scott Benson, Gabe Leland, Marry Sheffield, and Raquel Castaneda-Lopez. They join incumbents Saunteel Jenkins, Brenda Jones, Andre Spivey, and James Tate.

They take office January 1 and the first council meeting is January 6.

"I'm really excited about it being by districts, in that I have a certain amount of people who I am accountable to and have to represent, so being that it's by district excites me because I can be hands on and accessible to the people who elected me," Sheffield shares.

"We want a new Detroit, and they bring great wealth of advice and expertise to the table and we're looking forward to working with them over the next four years," says Spivey.

Council members also heard from mayor-elect Mike Duggan and emergency manager Kevyn Orr Wednesday.

Orr gave council an overview of how the city will move through bankruptcy and Duggan made it clear that elected officials will have to work together to regain their authority.

One thing the speakers implemented was the importance of cooperation, and there are plenty who believe this time that will happen.
