3 dead, 2 wounded in Tuesday shootings

Three people were killed and two others were wounded in shootings across the city since Tuesday afternoon.

A man trying to rob a South Side cell phone store was shot and killed by the store's owner Tuesday evening.

Armed with a handgun, 25-year-old Demarcus Brandon tried to rob a cell phone store about 6:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of East 87th Street, authorities said. The store's owner, armed with a handgun himself, shot and killed the would-be robber, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Brandon, of the of 120 block of East 140th Court in Riverdale, was pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner's office said.

Brandon was paroled in July from the Shawnee Correctional Center, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records. He was serving two concurrent sentences of three years and 13 years for charges that include armed robbery with a firearm.

About two hours earlier, a man was shot to death in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side.

About 4:40 p.m., officers responding to a call of shots fired found the 30-year-old with a gunshot wound to his head in the 11200 block of South Ada Street, police said.

Kevin Johnson, of the 100 block of South Ashland Avenue, was dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, one man was killed and another was seriously wounded in a shooting in the South Shore neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 12:20 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Paxton Avenue, police said.

Deonte Womack, 21, who lived less than two blocks from where he was shot, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died, according to the medical examiner's office. The other man, 22, was also taken to Northwestern in serious condition, police said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened Tuesday night in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side.

Just before 10 p.m., a 30-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to his right calf in a second-floor apartment in the 4700 block of South Indiana Avenue, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

Nobody is in custody for any of the shootings as area detectives investigate.
