On cold Chicago nights, Gerrard McClendon goes beyond words when it comes to caring about the homeless; he goes out looking for them to offer them something to keep them a bit warmer.

Six months ago after leaving a church outing at Navy Pier, McClendon began going out into the cold and offering the homeless gloves, hats, socks and other items that would keep them warm.

"I think the impetus was just seeing people actually living on the street, it's like you've got to be kidding me," McClendon said about starting his venture.

McClendon keeps his car stocked with clothing, blankets, food and other items so he is prepared whenever he sees someone in need. "The key is to just keep stuff in your car, so that, so that you're ready when you do see someone."

McClendon also offers the homeless something other than warmth, a sense of dignity by often giving out hugs in addition to clothing items.

His philosophy is simple, "I care. I don't have much, I'm not a multi-millionaire, but I care."
