Children With Critical Illnesses Take On Fantasy Flight

Posted: Updated:

Some sixty children with critical illnesses took a "fantasy flight" around the Bay Area Saturday.

United Airlines hosted the annual event for children who are undergoing treatment at Oakland Children hospital and Stanford Medical Center.

Local sports legends, from 49-ers to Olympic athletes, were on hand to greet the children, but the most exciting part of the event was flying at a low elevation in a triple-7 airplane.

"I think the flight itself is really amazing you know a lot of these kids are probably not able to fly normally and to be able to take your family on a special flight and see Santa Claus is pretty amazing," Olympic Skater Kristi Yamaguchi said.

Not only was the departure gate and plane decked out, after the flight landed, the children were taken to a gate that was transformed into the North Pole. Families were also given a $200 Target gift card.
