William Beavers reports to Minn. prison to serve 6 months

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Former Cook County Commissioner William Beavers reported to prison in Minnesota Monday morning, to begin serving his six-month sentence at the Federal Medical Center in Rochester.

A prison spokesman confirmed that Beavers reported at 7:49 a.m. Monday, although the Federal Bureau of Prisons website does not yet reflect the 78-year-old's presence in the jail.

Last week, a judge refused the outspoken ex-politician's lawyers' request to remain out of jail while they appeal his tax evasion case. Beavers was convicted in March of failing to declare campaign cash as income after he spent the money on slot machines.

After spending more than a quarter century as a leading Chicago Democrat, Beavers never testified at his sentencing hearing, declaring afterward: "I ain't begging for nothing."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
