Shoppers Hit Stores Looking For Deals Before Black Friday

Posted: Updated:
DEPTFORD, N.J. -

It wasn't Black Friday just yet, but bargain hunters had been at it for hours!

Many shoppers spent hours waiting outside on this blustery Thanksgiving Day for an early shot at Black Friday sales.

Local retailers opened their doors to long lines earlier than ever before.

FOX 29's Omari Fleming was live at the Best Buy in Deptford, New Jersey, where he said things started off slow but then came a steady stream of shoppers. Another stream of customers was outside, waiting to get in to try and get their hands on some bargains.

Luciana Pendleton was running in place and getting revved up for Best Buy's door-busters. She was the first through the door after her family started camping out at the Deptford store Monday just so they could capitalize on the Super Bowl of sales.

"I scored an Asus computer for $199, no for $243." Was it worth the wait? "Yes," she said.

Titanic televisions and electronics were tops on the list of shoppers like Mike Dinuova, who slept outside the store.

"Yeah, it's worth it. I mean, you get the rush like right before you go in the store, you get all hyped and ready to go get some deals on Black Friday," Dinuova said.

Prices aren't the only things dropping at area retailers this year. It seems the number of people camping out and lining up are, too.

Even though several stores, like Best Buy, opened on Thanksgiving Day at 6 p.m., earlier than ever before, a recent survey notes more than 50 percent of shoppers are planning a Black Friday blackout. Many of them are citing over-hyped sales and concern for employees working earlier on the holiday.

Some of these shoppers say they're not fans of employees having to sacrifice, but they say they don't want to miss out on a good sale.

"I disagree with that, but I'm not going to be able to find these deals any other time of the year," shopper Sarah Cupps said.

Those surveys and some people say people they're not going to shop this Black Friday, but the National Retail Foundation said it's expecting an up year, $602 billion in holiday sales.

Elsewhere, shoppers started a marathon session Thursday night at Willow Grove Park Mall in Montgomery County. Stores opened at 8 p.m. and will stay open until 10 p.m. Friday.

Retailers are thankful for the opportunity to do big business.
